IHK-Fachkundeprüfung Taxi & Mietwagen

Prepare for the German taxi and private hire exam – in German, with English help

To run your own taxi or private hire (Mietwagen) business in Germany, you need to pass the Fachkundeprüfung, a professional competence exam held by the local Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK). The exam is only in German. In MietStark you answer the questions in German, and whenever something is unclear you can open the English translation.

With a free account you get the complete Law and Safety subjects with English translations, plus the mock exam. No payment details needed.

  • 869 practice questions covering every exam subject: law, cost calculation, vehicle technology, safety, employment law and cross-border transport
  • English translations of questions and explanations, for when the German gets hard
  • Timed mock exam (written parts 1 and 2)
  • On your phone or computer, whenever it suits you

How does the translation help?

The real exam is in German, and the app marks your answers in German too, so the German text always comes first. The English translation is there to help you understand the question and the explanation. We keep key terms in German in brackets, e.g. “fare obligation (Tarifpflicht)”, so you learn the exact words you will see in the exam.

MietStark is not an official IHK product and cannot guarantee that you pass.

How does the exam work?

The exam is held by your local Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK), and it is in German.

It usually has two written parts and an oral exam. About 40% of the marks come from the questions in written part 1, about 35% from exercises, case studies and cost calculations in written part 2, and about 25% from the oral exam.

To pass you usually need around 60% overall and at least around 50% in each part. Your IHK can tell you the exam dates and how to register.

  • Business and financial management (Kaufmännische Führung)

Show answer
Correct answer: B
Mietwagen dürfen nur nach vorheriger Bestellung und ohne „Heranwinken“ von der Straße eingesetzt werden.
Private hire cars may only be used on prior booking and must not be hailed on the street.

A private hire service is defined by prior booking. Offering rides at the roadside, as taxis do, is generally not permitted. Both types of service require a licence.

  2. Drive in, as taxis and private hire cars are exempt from the sticker requirement
  3. Go anyway and factor the possible fine into the price
  4. Accept the job only with a permitted vehicle, otherwise decline or reschedule
Show answer
Correct answer: D
Auftrag nur mit zulässigem Fahrzeug oder Ablehnung/Umplanung
